Thanks for the translation. I don't speak Polish and it is a little bit difficult to understand the second sentence of the English translation, could somebody please take a look to see if it can be translated more clearly? Regards, Thuresson 21:58, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photos from the President's website now under GFDL[edit]

The President's website now says that it releases all photographs under the GFDL license. The only exception are the photos of historical presidents (on this page) which were previously published elsewhere. So I guess we're free to modify this template to simply say that the photograph is GFDL because it comes from the Polish president's official website. The source should be given as: "Archiwum Kancelarii Prezydenta RP - www.prezydent.pl".

Since the template is protected, I'm putting below my suggestion as to what it should look like now. Kpalion 18:21, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Public domain This photograph is released under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 published by the Free Software Foundation because it originally comes from the Archive of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Polandwww.prezydent.pl. A copy of the license is included in the section entitled "GNU Free Documentation License".

Please insert your work and add a link to http://www.prezydent.pl/x.node?id=1011893. Could you give us a translation of the official statement? Thank you. --Polarlys 18:46, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What about the link in the template? --Polarlys 19:13, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I added the the English translation of the legal notice below. Please note that there is also a legal notice on the English version of the website, but it contains no mention of GFDL. My guess is that it's because they haven't updated the English version yet. As for putting the link in the template, I'm not sure were to place it exactly to make it look nice and coherent. Feel free to do it yourself (I can put it in the Polish part after you do it in the English one). I included the link in the template. I'm not a lawyer, but I hope the whole template text makes sense. — Kpalion(talk) 01:36, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of the copyright statement from the President's website[edit]

I moved the translation to the template main page, so that it's always easy to find it, even if this talk page gets large at some point in the future. --Botev 04:28, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did we have anything to do with this?[edit]

Does anyone think the Polish government's choice of the GFDL was influenced by Wikipedia? -Nard 01:42, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know it was :) At first permission was similar to {{Attribution}}, but it was questioned. Some Polish wikipedians wrote to president's chancellary and they put GFDL license. Note that this permision does not extend to Polish government in general: Polish Senate (upper house of parlament) agreed to GFDL too {{PolishSenateCopyright}}, but with Sejm there was no success (see: {{SejmCopyright}}). A.J. 06:25, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One more remark: in Poland head of govermnent is not president, but prime minister: photos from government's site may be used with no charge, but are not free for Commons, because selling them is forbidden. No explicite permission for derivative works either. A.J. 16:02, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
SejmCopyright issue is discussed at Commons:Deletion requests/Template:SejmCopyright.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 14:39, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, this would make an interesting news story for Wikipedia Signpost. Do we know who wrote, how long did it take, what kind of replies did they get? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 01:18, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to ask on Polish Wikipedia mailing list. A.J. 07:07, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Any news? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 20:12, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No one responsed... Not all Polish Wikipedians are subscribed, you may read deletion request discussion for this template and find who contacted president's house. A.J. 06:45, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believe I did, but I didn't get any response from the Chancellary, so I think it's not me who should take credit for that. --Botev 12:51, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GFDL -> Attribution?[edit]

At present GFDL is not mentioned, only credit is required. The legal notice now reads Permission is granted to re-use, copy and reproduce the materials available on the Internet service of the President of the Republic of Poland, provided they are credited. This permission does not apply only to those elements the rights to which are reserved, and to graphic design elements, which may not be modified in any way whatsoever. Changing the template may not be a good idea, although or exactly because the change goes in the beneficial direction from a more restricted to a freer license. Do our Polish colleagues have any information about when the change has occured, on what occasion, and how is it best to proceed with the template? Spiritia 22:40, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, not exactly. The license is unclear now, as it doesn't explicitely mention commercial use and modifications. IMHO this means, we should deprecate the template and stop uploading the images from the President's website. I've just compaired it with the legal notice in Polish and that version does mention GFDL. I think they simply forgot to change the English legal notice when they were releasing the images to GFDL. So, at present we have two versions - the Polish one that mentions GFDL and the English one that doesn't contradict it. However, the English version doesn't necessarily mean {{Attribution}} because it doesn't mention commercial use and derivative works. Therefore I strongly oppose changing the tag. --Botev 23:42, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks for sorting this out, I admit that I haven't checked the Polish version, since my understanding of the language is rather limited. :-) Maybe the website support should be prompted to unify the legal notices. Spiritia 21:43, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Before GFDL license was granted, both language version were similar to {{Attribution}}; some people complained that the permission text does not mention derivative works and commercial usage, which makes it similar to "press material". I reverted once or twice link to English version because it does not support this template and is confusing. A.J. (talk) 08:26, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GFDL license is 1.2 only[edit]

GFDL license is GFDL 1.2, not 1.3 or later. The presidential website may only mention GFDL in the text note but the link at the bottom goes to GFDL-1.2/pl . --Denniss (talk) 17:23, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The link in the bottom goes to a translation of the GFDL license. It is not important where the link goes, as the actual license declaration is above the link and it does not mention a version number. I assume the GFDL 1.2 was the newest version at the time, so they linked to the most recent translation. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 17:39, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not assume anything regarding licenses. The only hint we have is the GFDL 1.2 statement. Maybe one of the polish speaking contributors mails them, asking for clarification. --Denniss (talk) 21:34, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The main hint is that they are not mentioning a license number anywhere in the text. If they really wanted to restrict it to 1.2 only, they would have put that in the text. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 22:10, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Current permission is not free[edit]

The text on http://www.prezydent.pl/prawa-autorskie/ is now different, definitely not free (no derivatives works allowed). Archive.org confirms that the GFDL permission was given in the past, we have snapshots of GFDL permission from September 2008 to April 2009 (note hat as stated above, the GFDL license was added after a request from Wikipedia volunteers). Prior to that, going as far as February 2005, the license was also liberal, as all it required was attribution ("Zezwala się na używanie, kopiowanie oraz wykorzystanie materiałów znajdujących się w serwisie internetowym Prezydenta RP, z zaznaczeniem źródła ich pochodzenia"). In September 2009, however, the URL was changed, from http://www.prezydent.pl/x.node?id=1011893 to http://prezydent.pl/prawa-autorskie, through at first that page also confirmed GFDL ([1]). That changed in 2011, and Archive.org allows us to pinpoint the time of the change up to a month: between mid-July and mid-August. 16 July still has the liberal GFDL license ([2]), but 15 August has the awful fullish copyright legalize ([3]). I believe we should request the reversal of this policy. PS. Polish discussion is at Commons:Bar#PolishPresidentCopyright_juz_nieaktulane.3F. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 14:20, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the sad state of copyright awareness of Polish officials, Episode 1423. Remember 1939.pl and related portals, where the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed copyright to any photo published there, including photos clearly made before 1900, or photos by foreign photographers, or WWII photos by unknown photographers... Which was more than enough for our copyright paranoiacs to delete them all. Apparently little changed since then. Halibutt (talk) 08:58, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Halibutt: Could you link that old discussion? I'd like to review it. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 13:59, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Piotrus: look for the history of Template:PolandGov. I'm pretty sure it was on wikipedia first. Halibutt (talk) 09:06, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
